The Sumner High School Band Program is a family group, one that not only has a positive effect on the students who are the performers but also is a source of pride and excellence for parents and siblings, even grandparents and other relatives. Now being parents that have had 2 sons enter and complete the Sumner High School Band Program (and move on to the University of Washington Husky Marching Band), I am certainly aware of the sacrifices and adjustments that being a "band family" entails. Many times as students get older and more mobile, parents and families can feel a little more disconnected and less involved in their lives and actions. I challenge all band parents and families to stay connected with your student here at Sumner High School, not only in band but all aspects of school. Some of these band-related ideas include:
· Attending concerts and sporting events - I know it's many times "free-time" after a long week for parents, but enjoy the energy and excitement of a high school football or basketball event (and of course, watch and listen to the band), and the concerts are events that the students work very hard to perform very well at - whether they tell you or not, they want you to attend.
· Attend band rehearsals - the doors are always open and I encourage you to watch what makes a fine performance - not just the finished performance-product. You will be impressed at how hard the students work.
· Go ahead (and perhaps initially against your student's wishes) and chaperone a band trip - I think it's as fun for the parents as it is for the students. Try coming on one and you'll see.
· Take an active role or at least attend the monthly Sumner HS Spartan Band Parents Association Meeting and help to shape and influence the band program
· And of course, support your student - they will have good days and bad days and they really do appreciate your interest in their lives
It's been great to meet a lot of our new parents at the band events we've had so far, and I look forward to working hard to make band a rewarding experience for your sons and daughters. Yes, it will be a class and an educational opportunity, but over the course of the 4 years students are here at Sumner High School and in the band it is more than that - we will share many life events and experiences and I will get the unique chance to see your students grow up right before our eyes. What a great opportunity we will have together - I hope you know that I understand and really enjoy this brief but important chapter in your student's lives, and we'll do all we can to make it something they will remember fondly. As always, I appreciate your e-mails and calls - please feel free to contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns about our Sumner High School Band Program. Thanks for giving my family the chance to work with your family.
