2018-19 Sumner HS Spartan Band & Color Guard

5/20 thru 6/2 (Updated 5/19/19)

....................................................................................

We had a fun week last week, performing (in the rain) for the final meeting of the SHS Task-Force looking at the future facilities of Sumner HS and having our 2019-20 Jazz Ensemble Tryouts, which is always fun to hear both the growth of the current High School students and the upcoming new students who will be part of our program next year.  Also, if you hadn't heard, the Sumner HS Spartan Marching Band was awarded 1st Place in the Sequim Irrigation Festival Parade and the Color Guard earned a 2nd Place Award as well.  Austin Smith was honored at the Senior Showcase on Wednesday Night, and we're very proud of the legacy that he leaves as he will move on to the University of North Texas next year.  At Thursday's SBPA Meeting we voted-in new officers for 2019-20, so congratulations to President Kris Fox, Vice President Taryn Capps, Secretary Lynette Fuge, and Treasurer Rebecca Engelhardt for assuming these very important positions (and a GIANT Thank You to outgoing President Maria Sauers, Vice President Patsy Conner, Secretary Rebecca Engelhardt and Treasurer Mindy Walenceus for their excellent service during this year).  So here we go - we've got an important week coming up as we work towards the Memorial Day Holiday next week, though our schedule is adjusted with the State Testing Tuesday and Thursday:
  • On Wednesday we have the first of 2 very important after-school LONG-DISTANCE Marching Band parade rehearsals (any student who missed last week's afternoon rehearsal MUST-ATTEND this rehearsal on Wednesday to be able to participate in the Portland Parade on June 8th).  Both this rehearsal and next week's May 29th rehearsal will be over 4 miles, so as to get us used to the demanding length and conditioning necessary for the Portland Parade.  Please be prepared and pre-hydrate for whatever conditions we encounter.  Also, prior to starting our "big march", we will be announcing the theme and listening to the opener music for our terrific 2019 Fall Field Show!  We think everyone is going to really love it!
  • Our 2019-20 Drumline Tryouts will be Thursday, with interested students performing and trying-out for Mr. Olaiya from 3:00-5:30PM.
  • Mrs. Carl and I will be leaving Friday morning for Indianapolis and the 103rd Running of the Indy 500 Race, but of course we'll be observing (and getting ideas) as we attend the BIG 500 Festival Parade on Saturday morning in Downtown Indianapolis prior to the Race on Sunday (it seems a long time ago that we marched in that parade and at the 100th Running of the Indy 500, but it was  just 3 years ago that we attended and had a memorable, fantastic trip!)
