2019-20 Sumner HS Spartan Band & Color Guard

(Updated 5/17/2020)

....................................................................................

Hi Everyone:

Welcome to another BLAST and another week of our Distance-Learning Spring of 2020.  First of all, thank you to all of you who we saw on Friday at the SHS Staff Parade - it was so good to see all of your smiles and waves, and while it was only for a few seconds, to me it reminded me that we'll all be back together in this someday somewhere and put things back in perspective.  Just do what you're supposed to do and use this time as a re-charge - try to push yourself to be better in the things you know that you can improve.  Challenge yourself in some small way every day.  I think I'm going to come back from this as a better person and I hope you will too.  Secondly, thank you to the students who are checking in with me every week before I turn-in attendance at 12:00PM on Fridays - don't forget.  Also, thank you also to the many students who have turned-in their awards forms - I'm still accepting them, but not for much longer, so as you read this, get it turned-in ASAP (it was on the BLAST a few weeks ago, as well as the calendar of this school-year from August to March ).  Finally, thank you also to the students who have been staying up-to-date on their assignments, both for all of their classes but also for the Band Program classes as well - we've got a new weekly assignment coming-out tomorrow, so watch for it on our Google Classrooms (once again, I've put the class codes at the end of the BLAST).

Now, new for this week, we've got to finalize some special awards for the 20 of our 2020 Seniors, so I need your votes.  If you're in Band (everyone), I need the name of the Senior you think is most worthy of the 2020 John Philip Sousa Award, if you're in Jazz Ensembles, I need your vote on the Louis Armstrong Award, and for Color Guard I need your vote on the Most Valuable and Most Improved Members (those CG Awards are not just for Seniors).  I've attached the actual ballots (see the BLAST)  but all you need to do is send the name(s) to me in an e-mail or text, but you've got to do it by Thursday May 21st.  Again (sorry to sound like a broken record) but don't forget.  As far as our weekly report on what has (or has not) been canceled, the Sumner Rhubarb Festival in July has been canceled for this year, but the Seafair Torchlight Parade and the White Rock Sea Festival Parade are still possible, while the Portland Rose Festival is still postponed to a date TBD.  At this time I don't know about the Summer Marching Band, but we'll take it week-by-week and see how it goes.  Students who have notified me about trying out for 2020-21 Drum Majors expect to be contacted this week and we'll get things going.  I also expect to get a plan going for collecting uniforms and equipment so watch for next Sunday's BLAST for more information (also watch for the 2020-21 Jazz Ensembles Tryouts information).

Well, there you go with the information for the week - remember to vote on those awards and get in those names to me by Thursday, check your class assignments, be safe and stay healthy, and I'll look forward to seeing all of you for more than just a few seconds sometime soon - it gets closer to happening every day.

Have a great week.
