2024-25 Sumner HS Marching Band & Color Guard
(Updated 3/9/2025)
Thanks for another excellent week last week - we did so much and so many different things and did them very well: our first Addams Family Musical Pit Orchestra rehearsal on Tuesday afternoon, our first combined Full Symphonic Bands and Parade Band rehearsals on Wednesday afternoon, and then 3 days in a row of State Championship BB Pep Band performances at the Tacoma Dome, where our terrific Girls BB Team ultimately came home with the 2nd Place Trophy - 2nd Place of all of the 4A schools in the State of Washington! They played so great and things just didn’t fall their way on Saturday night in the Championship but they can be very proud of their efforts this season, and with 4 consecutive years going to the finals in the Dome, don’t be surprised if they are back again for a 5th time next year. As for our Pep Band students, we performed at 28 PEP BAND PERFORMANCES THIS SEASON (and that was on top of 11 MB performances during FB season). What a year! Thank you so much to all the students for performing and to Mrs. Carl, Mrs. Selle, Mr. Laramore, Mrs. Woolery, and our fantastic Band Trailer Driver Mr. Bland for their excellent support during the State Championship run. It was a fun experience and I hope we get to do it again next year. Now we continue on with our very busy month of March: during this month we’ve already had the Big Band Dance and the State BB Championships, so now we’ve move on to our Symphonic Band Valley Region Band Contest this Saturday March 15th at Emerald Ridge HS (see information in the BLAST) and then we finish our competitions this month with the Commencement Bay Jazz Festival-Competition at Fife HS on Saturday March 22nd (also in the BLAST). It’s a very challenging period of various groups and styles of music but we adapt so well, just keep up your great work for a few more weeks (through the Daffodil Parades on April 5th). So, here we go with the next 2 weeks:

This week is really important - I consider the Valley Region Band Contest to be one of our peak-performance times of the year. We only have this one SB contest to show how we can do as individuals and our separate 9/10 and 11/12 groups and I think we are doing really well in our preparations. Everything counts starting with what I call the “Big 5” of outstanding playing:
- Notes
- Rhythms
- Articulations
- Dynamics
- Styles
And add onto that list tone, intonation, and blend control as individuals and as a group. We can do this if everyone has worked hard and is ready to perform at their very best on Saturday - let’s make it our best performance and see what happens. Thanks very much.
See you Monday
