2019-20 Sumner HS Spartan Band & Color Guard

(Updated 1/26/2020)

....................................................................................

Thanks to everyone for their outstanding dedication over the last week in what was a very busy time period.  In case you didn't know, we had 6 performances over last week's 4 school-days:
  • SWIMMING PEP BAND performance on Tuesday afternoon
  • BASKETBALL PEP BAND performance on Tuesday night
  • DOUBLE-HEADER (5-HOUR) BASKETBALL PEP BAND performances on Thursday night
  • DRUMLINE performance at the Spartans Got Talent Show on Friday night, and
  • WRESTLING PEP BAND performance on Friday night
This is certainly not a normal occurrence, but nonetheless we had a large number of students that made the effort to be at these performances, all of which were voluntary.  I had positive comments from visiting school parents and even the basketball referees at how well our students performed, so thank you again so much for a great week!  Now things start to get really interesting, as we have many things coming together over the next few weeks.  We'll continue rehearsing with the 9/10 and 11/12 Symphonic Bands (they are separate groups playing separate pieces) as they prepare for our February 11th Concert.  Likewise, our 3 Jazz Ensembles have condensed for the time being into 2 groups (primarily the Jazz B and Jazz C groups have come together so nobody is doubling on more than one group) and will also be performing at the February 11th Concert and upcoming Jazz Competitions in March and April.  The Pep Band continues to roll along, with 2 performances this week (on Wednesday and Friday nights), and then we add the next part - the Marching Band & Color Guard start to get ready for the Hawaii Parade and Pearl Harbor performances as we read-thru the new pieces we'll be doing.  Of course, we can't forget about the 15 Solo-Ensemble events that are getting ready for the February 22nd Valley Region Contest.   We'll have fun and it will be interesting, but students will have to keep track of what we're doing each day, so here's our next 2 weeks schedule to look at carefully:

So, here we go on another week of rehearsals and performances.  I hope all of you enjoy what we do, even when it gets to be a lot going on.  I hope we all joined Band out of our love for all that it is: working together for excellence, learning to work with each other (and me), and enjoying the experience that is really one-of-a-kind at Sumner HS.  There was a really cool piece on the CBS Evening News on Friday night and it was repeated again on the CBS Sunday Morning show that shows how I hope we all felt as we grew-up.  Here it is:
Let's have a great week together, as I'm sure Henry is back in Howell, Michigan.  Thank you for being the great Sumner HS Band students and parents that you are!
