2024-25 Sumner HS Marching Band & Color Guard

(Updated 1/27/2025)

....................................................................................

We had a very good final week of the first semester, with a Swim Meet Pep Band performance, a State Send-Off performance for our Cheerleaders and All-NW musicians (including Aiden Hatcher), 2 BB Pep Band performances (including our always fantastic 8th Grader Night Game on Friday) and our annual Curriculum Showcase event. Thanks to the students who were at all 5 events this last week and did a great job - we are undefeated in all of the Pep Band performances we’ve had in 2025! Our Symphonic Bands and Jazz Ensembles are working hard on getting the music down for our performances coming-up on Thursday February 27th at the Sumner HS Bands Winter Concert (remember that we’ve changed the date from the original Wednesday February 5th) and we’re starting to get things organized for the 2025 Sumner HS Big Band Dance, which has been bumped-up a week to Saturday March 1st. I know the date changes can be a challenge, but hopefully knowing about it this early will work out OK. We’ve got several events coming-up this week, with 2 Basketball Pep Band performances, one on Tuesday January 28th and our annual Senior Band Members Night on Thursday January 30th. We’ve also got 21 different events representing our Sumner HS Band Program at the Valley Region Solo-Ensemble Contest at Puyallup HS on Saturday February 1st (see schedule in the BLAST) and we’re very proud of the students who have worked hard to prepare. The Contest is open and free for anyone to attend, so I encourage students and families to support our fine musicians as they perform in their events all over the school. You can also see and hear the students at the Pre Solo-Ensemble Contest Night at the Sumner HS Band Room on Wednesday January 29th starting at 6:30PM as they get a chance to “test-run” their performances and get ready for their big moments on Saturday. We’ll also see by next weekend where we end-up in the Boys and Girls BB SPSL 4A League Playoffs starting February 5th-8th and if we’ve got any upcoming games, but given the records that both teams have I expect we’ll have a great playoff season ahead of us, with the hopeful final stop in the State Finals at the Tacoma Dome in March.

I want to remind students that we have a great chance to restart things here with the second semester, and while we don’t have new Band Program classes, we can hopefully treat this as a fresh start in a number of ways:

  • ATTENDANCE: we had a lot of students miss a LOT of days in the first semester (I know that there was a lot of illness and other situations), but I hope that students will treat this zeroing of the attendance and tardies as a great chance to re-energize their efforts to be at school and on-time on a daily basis, both in classes and extra-curricular  events
  • GOOD-WORK EFFORTS: it sometimes gets to be a drag working hard every day from early morning to late-night, but we think it’s a great time to set goals and improve from the first semester in all classes, but in Band & CG to get ahead with practicing and set regular schedules as best you can
  • TEAMWORK: we accomplished so much in the first half of this 2024-25 year as a group, but we won’t meet quite as often during a lot of the second semester as we split into 9/10, 11/12, Drumline, and CG groups until we start our full MB-CG rehearsals in March. Let’s make a great effort to stay in contact and support each other in all of the many things that we do

Let’s get this second semester started, so here’s our known schedule for the next couple of weeks (again, the BB playoff schedule won’t be known until next weekend):

HAVE A GREAT REST OF A LONG WEEKEND AND SEE YOU TUESDAY
